Founded in 1978 and originating from a school of Beijing Institute of Iron & Steel, Shougang Institute of Technology(SGIT) is an engineering college officially approved and authorized by the Ministry of Education. Before 1999, SGIT mainly focused on the education of undergraduates with six bachelor degrees –the Degree of Machinery Design & Manufacture, the Degree of Metallurgy of Iron and Steel, the Degree of Metal Working, the Degree of Industrial Automation, the Degree of Constructional Engineering and the Degree of Trade and Industry. Since 1999, with the higher vocational education developing vigorously in China, SGIT has set up a distinctive educational target to cultivate more practical talents and started organizing higher vocational education system.
Currently, the institute consists of 4 departments and 1 school, they are Department of Economic Management, Department of Computer Science, Department of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering, Department of Architecture & Environmental Protecting Engineering, Department of Basic Courses and Adult Education School. There are 25 specialties for the students to take higher vocational education, which contain Marketing and Planning, Environmental Monitoring and Treatment Technology, and 8 specialties for the adult students to take further education with a degree. About 3,600 students may take full-time higher vocational courses while the other 3,000 adult students may take part-time courses. Moreover, every year about 20,000 people have been trained for the enterprise.
SGIT has good teaching facilities. It covers 167,535 square meters, in which 25,074 square meters internship and laboratory construction area is within its 91,237 square meters construction area. There is a playground surrounded by 400- meter standard environmental green rubber tracks and many training grounds for all kinds of ball games. Modern teaching facilities such as training center, computer rooms, professional classrooms, laboratory, network center etc. are located in SGIT. A volume of 294 thousand books are kept in the library. The teaching facilities and the good learning environment make SGIT at the top place among the similar academies circle in Beijing.

Each room has a bathroom, water heater, furniture, air-conditioner, TV set and telephone etc. 40--80 RMB per day per student (Excluding water, electricity, telephone fee)
Ⅲ. Admission
（Ⅰ）Admission requirements
1. Students for both diploma courses and further studies must have a senior middle-school diploma or equivalent and be able to study the majors in Chinese. Students also should have good health and agree to abide by the laws and regulations of the Chinese Government and SGIT. After applying and approved by SGIT, they can study the courses taught in Chinese. Otherwise they may be arranged to study Chinese for one year at first. After passing the HSK examination and getting the qualified certificate above junior level, they can continue their majors.
2. Short-term studies, Chinese studies “one to one” and Chinese language classes: foreigners must:
- have a high school diploma or above
- be aged between 18 and 60
- have good health
- abide by the laws and regulations of the Chinese Government and SGIT
- be interested in Chinese culture
（Ⅱ）Application and registration procedure
objective: Diploma courses,、Students for further studies and Chinese language classes.
As for Chinese studies “one to one” and Short-term studies, students can come to our institute to study at any moment.
1. The start of studies: every year is divided into two semesters. The first semester starts on Sep.1, and the second starts from the middle ten days of February to the early March.
2. Admission application: Contact SGIT by mail or email to request brochure and application form, or log on our website to download the Application Form for International Students and physical examination record and mail the application materials to the foreign affairs office of SGIT.
Application materials include:
⑴ Submit the completed Application Form for International Students
⑵ Submit the copy of senior middle-school diploma
⑶ Submit the copy of passport
⑷ Mail 400 RMB for the application fee
3. Procedure to China: When approved, SGIT will mail an admission notice and JW202 form to the students. With the admission notice, JW202 form, foreigners can apply for a visa at a Chinese Embassy or Consulate of the People's Republic of China in student's home country. Those who plan to stay in China for over 6 months should have the physical checkup form completed by a physician.
4. Registration:
⑴ Register according to the time specified on the admission notice
⑵ Registration requires the admission notice, JW202 form, physical examination record, 8 pieces of 2-inch photos. Meanwhile the students should pay all fees at one time.
（Ⅲ）Practice
After finishing their studies, the excellent students will be recommended by SGIT to the relative companies or enterprises to get practical training.
